3 best Netflix movies to watch (and 2 to skip) this weekend, Jan. 13

Another weekend is upon us, bringing Netflix subscribers the heartfelt Rob Lowe-led movie Dog Gone and more. Here’s what you should watch (and skip) on the weekend of Jan. 13-15.

From a compelling new gothic thriller starring Christian Bale to a heartwarming movie starring an adorable pup, Netflix has many great options to watch this weekend. Some older films are now available to stream on the platform, which might pique your interest.

I always prefer holding off until the weekends to watch movies when I can relax and enjoy them. If you’re unsure what you want to watch this weekend, we can help you decide with a list of great movies to check out and a few you can probably skip for now.

The Pale Blue Eye

Watch! Released on Jan. 6, The Pale Blue Eye is one of Netflix’s first big movie releases of the year. Based on Louis Bayard’s novel of the same name, this gothic thriller set in the 1800s stars Christian Bale as an apathetic detective assigned to solve a gruesome string of murders with assistance from West Point cadet Edgar Allen Poe (Harry Melling) who would go on to become a world-famous writer.

Transformers: Dark of the Moon

Skip! I enjoyed the first live-action Transformers movie, and even the second one was alright. Still, by the time this franchise gets to the third film, it’s hard to justify its continued existence, especially when there are better movies in this franchise, like the Hailee Steinfeld-led Bumblebee.

Dark of the Moon boasts impressive visuals and CGI yet never justifies its bloated runtime. Plus, this movie swaps out Megan Fox for Rosie Huntington-Whiteley and nothing against her, but it felt weird without Megan.

Dog Gone

Watch! Dog Gone probably won’t be anything you haven’t seen before, but sometimes a predictable, heartfelt movie is just what you need. Rated PG, this inspiring film based on a true story might be the perfect film to unwind with your family this weekend. Rob Lowe and Johnny Berchtold star as a father and son searching for their beloved dog Gonker when he vanishes on the Appalachian Trail. And don’t worry; the dog doesn’t die.

10 Minutes Gone

Skip! Even though 10 Minutes Gone is a new arrival to the Netflix catalog, and already in the streamer’s weekly Top 10, I don’t recommend watching this action thriller. The Bruce Willis-led film has a 0% approval rating on Rotten Tomatoes. The audience score isn’t much better, meaning the film received an overwhelmingly negative reaction. You could probably spend your time watching something better.

The Hatchet Wielding Hitchhiker

Watch! If you’re in the mood for something a little different, this new Netflix documentary film is a fast-paced watch at just 90 minutes. The story surrounds Kai Lawrence, a hitchhiker who became a viral internet sensation after he purported to save a woman’s life and got interviewed by a news station afterward. Months later, Kai was sentenced to 50+ years in jail for murdering a lawyer. It’s a crazy story, and while the doc is relatively shallow, it’s a good primer for those unfamiliar with the case.
