4 best Netflix movies to watch (and 3 to skip) for New Year’s Eve 2022

Can you believe we’ve made it to the final day of the year? It’s New Year’s Eve, and we’re about to bring in 2023 in style. Whether you like going out on New Year’s or prefer to stay in, we’ve got a couple of Netflix movies to choose from (or to avoid altogether) that should help you have a good night!

Keep in mind that while there are a few “skips” on here, that doesn’t necessarily mean the movie is bad, just that it might not be the right film to watch on this particular day/night!

Best Netflix movies to watch on New Year’s Eve

Without further ado, let’s get into the best Netflix movies to watch on New Year’s Eve, and a few you might want to hold off on for now.

DO REVENGE – Maya Hawke as Eleanor in Do Revenge. Cr. Kim Simms/Netflix © 2022.

Do Revenge

Watch! We previously named Do Revenge as one of the best movies of the year, so if you haven’t had the chance to watch this dark comedy starring Riverdale actress Camila Mendes and Stranger Things‘ Maya Hawke, then now is your chance! Do Revenge is the perfect film to put on while preparing for a night out or setting up for a night in. It’s hilarious, witty, and very charming.

Prisoners

Skip! Don’t get me wrong, Prisoners is a fantastic movie and definitely one worth watching, but if you’re looking for something lighthearted and easy to watch while you’re getting ready to go out for the night, Prisoners probably isn’t a good choice. Netflix recently added the 2013 film starring Jake Gyllenhaal and Hugh Jackman to its catalog, so you’ve got plenty of time to watch it. Save it for a night when you can give it your full attention!

Roald Dahl’s Matilda the Musical. (L to R) Stephen Graham as Mr. Wormwood, Andrea Riseborough as Mrs. Wormwood in Roald Dahl’s Matilda the Musical. Cr. Dan Smith/Netflix © 2022

Matilda: The Musical

Watch! Alisha Weir and Emma Thompson go head-to-head as Matilda and Miss Trunchbull in the stage-to-film adaptation of Matilda: The Musical, itself based on Roald Dahl’s classic novel Matilda. Matilda: The Musical has excellent reviews, and if you missed it on Christmas Day because you were busy with the holiday, New Year’s Eve might be the perfect time to watch it.

White Noise

Skip! Again, White Noise is a movie worth checking out, but if you’re busy on New Year’s Eve and trying to find a film that works well as background noise, this isn’t a good choice for the evening. That said, if you don’t care much about the holiday and want something new to watch until the clock strikes midnight, then White Noise could be the perfect pick.

A Cinderella Story

Watch! I’m always looking for excuses to rewatch A Cinderella Story, and now is a great time to do it because Dec. 31 is the last day to watch the film on Netflix before it leaves (again). Odds are, A Cinderella Story will return to Netflix at some point since it seems to come and go, but it’s a fun rom-com starring Hilary Duff and Chad Michael Murray that will make you feel nostalgic. Plus, everyone is loving Jennifer Coolidge right now, post-The White Lotus season 2 (as they should), and she’s iconic as Sam’s (Duff) evil stepmom Fiona in this movie.

After Ever Happy

Skip! Unless you’re in the small group of people who are obsessed with these movies, you can probably go ahead and skip Afer Ever Happy. It’s also the fourth movie in this film franchise, so if you’re thinking of watching it just because it’s new to Netflix, but you haven’t seen any of the previous films, you might be lost.

Glass Onion: A Knives Out Mystery

Watch! Glass Onion: A Knives Out Mystery is the highly-anticipated sequel to the 2019 movie from Rian Johnson. Not only does Glass Onion have a vibrant location, a fantastic cast, and a tightly-written script, but it’s just a blast to watch from start to finish. Watching this should put you in a great mood, which is an excellent way to start the new year!
