Avatar: The Way of Water (Avatar: The Way of Water) starts this 2023 in the best way: it has just surpassed the worldwide box office sales of the successful Top Gun: Maverick. The sequel that brought back the universe created by James Cameron has earned, to date, a total of 1.52 billion dollars in revenue worldwide, according to an estimate from the same Disney company.

The figure places it above the sequel to top gun which starred Tom Cruise, since the production of Paramount Pictures totaled some 1.49 billion at the global box office. This title, which, curiously, is also a second part, was released in theaters in May 2022, although its release did not extend to China, a region where the continuation of Avatar has generated some 169 million dollars.

Cameron’s visionary franchise is the largest in movie history, and though it took 13 years to deliver a second installment, his leadership is unmatched. It was only surpassed for a brief time by Avengers: Endgamehowever, it regained its leadership as the highest grossing thanks to its big screen revival.

In 2019, Disney completed the purchase of 20th Century Fox and, with it, obtained the distribution rights of Avatar a decade after the original film was released in theaters (exactly, in 2009). The first film was not only a resounding phenomenon on the billboards at the time, but also earned critical acclaim and received multiple Oscars.

Avatar: The Way of Water It is also one of the most expensive productions that have come to light under the Disney label: the total investment amounts to 400 million dollars. Much of the budget went into implementing innovative technologies for shooting large-scale scenes and bringing computer-generated characters to life with great realism.

In this sequel, audiences will be reunited with Sully (Sam Worthington), a former human, and Neytiri (Zoe Saldaña), a Na’vi native. After a decade of conflict between humanity and the Na’vi people, both have raised a family in Pandora, a place where days of peace live until another threat comes to torment them in their fantastic paradise. Also starring are Sigourney Weaver, Michelle Rodriguez, Kate Winslet, Stephen Lang, Giovanni Ribisi, Joel David Moore, CCH Pounder, and Laz Alonso.
