2022 was one of the better years in film this decade. That said, 2023 has one of the best slates on paper we’ve had since the theaters reopened. So today, I am going to share the best movies coming in 2023 (that we know about so far).
Every year, I sit down and look at the calendar year in films and start to mark down the movies I am looking forward to the most. Last year, I was excited about quite a few movies that turned out to be great, like Babylon or Elvis, and some other films didn’t meet those expectations, like The Whale, or Don’t Worry Darling. One thing that stood out when I looked at this year’s calendar was how early the year starts in pumping out films. It starts in mid-Feburary and doesn’t let up until the end of summer, and that doesn’t factor in the fall season of films that have yet to be announced.
So after weeding through all the movies on the theatrical release list and the streaming list, I found the best movies coming in 2023.
The 12 best movies coming in 2023
80 for Brady – In Theaters – 02/03
I love Tom Brady, and I will not be taking any questions on this pick.
Creed III – In Theaters – 03/11
A franchise that is two for two in movies sees a change in the director’s chair with Michael B. Jordan making his directorial debut. We see the story follow Adonis (Jordan) thriving like never before when an old friend (Jonathan Majors) shows up to turn his life upside down.
Guardians of the Galaxy Vol. 3 – In Theaters – 05/05
The story follows Peter (Chris Pratt), who rallies the team for a mission that could end the team if they fail. Let’s be honest, this movie will make us cry, laugh, and probably cry again as we are about to witness the trilogy’s end.
Fast X – In Theaters – 05/19
Does this really surprise you? Dominic Toretto is returning to our theaters and we should all be thankful!
Mission: Impossible – Dead Reckoning (Part One) – In Theaters – 07/14
A franchise that could easily go down as one of the greatest ever if Cruise and McQuarrie knock it out of the ballpark as they have with the last two.
Oppenheimer – In Theaters – 07/21
A Christopher Nolan/Greta Gerwig double-header on the same day, and I will be seated for both. Cillian Murphy leads the cast as an American scientist and his role in developing the atomic bomb.
Barbie – In Theaters – 07/21
Come on, Barbie, let’s go party, if you aren’t looking forward to checking out Barbie in theaters, I am not sure we can be friends. The movie is written by power couple Greta Gerwig (who also directed it) and Noah Baumbach and stars Ryan Gosling and Margot Robbie.
Dune Part II – In Theaters – 11/03
While I wasn’t a HUGE fan of the first Dune, I will say that there was enough intrigue to have me excited to see the sequel. On top of that, you have some great additions to this cast, including Austin Butler. Butler sharing the same screen with Timothee Chalamet, Zendaya, Florence Pugh and Josh Brolin, this might be the hottest film of the year.
THG: The Ballad of Songbirds and Snakes – In Theaters – 11/17
I was a MASSIVE fan of The Hunger Games movies, and while I’ve never read any of the books, I am excited for the next chapter in the franchise. The story follows Coriolanus Snow (Tom Blyth), who develops feelings for the District 12 tribute. The franchise sees the switch from Jennifer Lawrence to West Side Story’s Rachel Zegler in the lead role.
Maestro – Netflix – TBD 2023
After the massive success of one Maestro in Tár last year, with Cate Blanchett delivering a knock-out performance, we have the Maestro set to release in 2023. The story follows the love story of Leonard and Felicia Bernstein, who Bradley Cooper and Maya Hawke play. Cooper not only stars but he co-wrote and directed the project.
Rustin – Netflix – TBD 2023
Rustin follows the story of Gay civil rights activist Bayard Rustin who organized the 1963 March on Washington. The film is directed by George C. Wolfe (Ma Rainey’s Black Bottom) and stars Colman Domingo (Euphoria) as Bayard Rustin.
Killers of the Flower Moon – Apple TV+ – TBD 2023
When you hear the names Leonardo DiCaprio and Martin Scorsese together, you don’t really need a reason to have it on your watch list. Let’s just cross our fingers that the movie finally comes out.
