Curiously, Louisiana was not the first place they chose to carry out the filming of emancipation. The crew had planned to film in Los Angeles, but this plan was changed twice.
The first change caused the production to move to Georgia. However, they had to move once again after the controversial Georgia Election Integrity Act of 2021 was introduced. Both the lead and the filmmaker felt they couldn’t shoot the movie there.
“We cannot in good conscience provide financial support to a government that enacts regressive voting laws designed to restrict voter access,” the stars declared.
This is how Louisiana became the main filming location. The move cost about $15 million, but it was definitely worth it.
