Golden Globes 2023: Argentina, 1985 is the hope of Latin America

The 80th edition of the annual ceremony of the Golden Globes, which will reward the best of cinema and television in the United States, will have its new edition on January 10, which will try to clean up the face of the association in charge, after complaints of racism in the last installment, which was not even broadcast on television, nor did it have the glamor of the red carpet. Thus, this time it will return to the classic nights of exhibition of dresses, astonishment and happiness in front of the small screen.

Within this framework, the Hollywood Foreign Press Association announced that the film Argentina, 1985which deals with the Trials of the Military Juntas and starring Ricardo Darin Y Peter Lanzani was nominated in the Best Foreign Film category and will compete against RRR (India), All Quiet on the Western Front (Germany), close (Belgium) and Decision to Leave (South Korea).

After some difficult years due to the pandemic and its scandals, the installment will have comedian Jerrod Carmichael as host. The appointment is the prelude to the Oscars where the Argentine film was also shortlisted last September by the Argentine Academy of Cinematographic Arts and Sciences to compete for a place in the Best International Film category.

Recently, Argentina, 1985 won three Coral Awards for male acting (Ricardo Darín), artistic direction (Micaela Saiegh) and best script (Mariano Llinás and Santiago Mitre), at the closing gala of the 43rd International Festival of New Latin American Cinema in Havana, Cuba, held in the traditional Charles Chaplin room of the Cuban capital. Furthermore, the director of the film, Santiago Miterwas the winner of the Signis Prize “due to his accurate approach to the past from a deep look”, according to the justification of the World Catholic Communication Association that awards this award.

After they accused the Hollywood Foreign Press Association (HFPA, for its acronym in English) of racism for not having African-American members in their presentations, the role of Jerrod Carmichael with the guests will be essential to remove that image from the award ceremony.

Before the ceremony itself begins, the red carpet will be the prelude to the 2023 Golden Globes, so various Hollywood stars are expected to walk around in their extravagant outfits for the ceremony. For this dynamic, Cristina Teva and Laia Portaceli will be in charge of directing the comments and interviews throughout this journey.

The movie of Santiago Miter It will be the only Latin American to compete in the Best Foreign Film category, so this time the flag that will be raised, in addition to the local one, will be that of the region. And without a doubt, the film knows very well that of representing the country both for the local and international awards won.

Among others, for example, the film received the 2022 Alicia Olivera Human Rights Award in an emotional ceremony that took place at the Picadero Theater and was organized by the Buenos Aires City Ombudsman’s Office.

“All these years we took it for granted that our policy of truth, memory and justice, and our presence in the streets was enough. The impression I got from sharing the film with younger generations is that the trial is a forgotten fact. This fact is foundational not only because it allowed, with other actions of other presidents, to reach the judgments of the truth, but because it was the confirmation that what we were saying actually happened,” said the Buenos Aires Ombudsman, Maria Rosa Muinoswhen delivering the statuette.

For his part, Miter was moved by the recognition, referred to the pride generated by the struggle of organizations and institutions and stressed: “Understanding that we are living in a moment in which speeches proliferate that seem not to respect democratic values ​​too much and that there are young people, particularly, holding those speeches, we had as objective to establish a bridge with that youth that seems not to want to look or remember”.
