New Disney movie will feature gay teen romance

The film was announced in Annecy International Animated Film Festival 2022 in Annecy, France, June 7. at the festival of cinema details and stills from the film were shown and attendees were given an overview of the young romance between two male characters, Ethan and Diazo.

The description of the romance was first reported in Variety and explains the context of their relationship in enough detail to show that the movie it has a gay theme, without revealing too much of the story.

Disney has had several characters who were assumed to be gay, although their sexuality was never acknowledged, in previous projects. For example, it was announced that the character LeFou from the live-action movie Beauty and the Beast was gay, along with the animated Cyclops Officer Spector from Onwardbut the sexuality of none of the characters was openly acknowledged or played a significant role in the development of the plot.

Disney recently released Lightyear, a prequel to the company’s wildly popular Toy Story franchise, featuring a lesbian character voiced by Uzo Aduba.. Lightyear is the first Pixar film to open in theaters since the Covid pandemic began, and the first Disney film to include a same-sex kiss.

However, the inclusion of the kiss has led to at least 14 countries in Asia and the Middle East barring Lightyear’s release with laws criminalizing homosexuality, including Saudi Arabia, Indonesia, Malaysia and Lebanon.

China, no stranger to censorship of same-sex affection or LGBTQ references in the movies, ban the movie. The parents asked that the scenes with the same-sex couple be removed, but Disney refused to edit them out.

It is expected that Strange World premieres in November 2022 and is also banned from some countries; however, it seems that Disney will not back down from its inclusion policy. Also, As part of its new inclusive marketing policy, the famous Disney company announced that it aims at the end of this year that at least half of the cartoon characters that they present will be homosexual or transgender.
