The name of Bella Ramsey is on everyone’s lips. The young woman, recognized worldwide for her role as Lyanna Mormont in the sixth season of the series game of Thronesstars in the adaptation of The Last of Usa sensational post-apocalyptic video game coming to HBO Max on January 15.
The young woman has worked in other roles over the years. She starred in the children’s series the worst witch and also participated as Mathilda in Requiem. Another of his outstanding roles came in 2019 with Judywhen he gave life to Lorna Luft, daughter of Judy Garland, who was played by Renée Zellweger.
More recently, Ramsey worked alongside director Lena Dunham on Catherine’s life (Catherine Called Birdy), an adaptation of the homonymous young adult novel written by Karen Cushman and published in 1994 that had its premiere at the end of 2022. A medieval coming-of-age that surprises for its authenticity and for which Dunham herself was in charge writing the script and directing.
History places us in 1290 in a small medieval English village. Catherine, the youngest of Lord Rollo’s and Lady Aislinn’s daughters, whom everyone knows as Birdy. Financially ruined, her parents plan to marry her off to someone from the nobility and thus recover her social position. But Catherine will find her own way and break with what is expected of a woman her age. The young woman herself will do everything in her power to scare off the candidates. She is continually exploring her identity and that is why she decides to write a private diary with her story to get to know herself.
The director faces this argument with the imprint that characterizes her: in a pleasant and fun way, but without neglecting sensitivity and harshness.
It is always interesting to pay attention to the creations of Dunham, one of the most revolutionary and transformative voices of the millennial generation and of the industry in general. Since Girlseven his book I’m not that kind of girlgoing through the productions where she was involved -including Sharp Sticks, another of her most recent feature films- all her projects are impregnated with her feminist vision and her political position and enable discussion on topics that are often taboo.
Y Catherine’s life is no exception. One of the themes that the director delves into is gender stereotypes and the mandates that women have in society. Through the protagonist, concepts such as the development of puberty, the first menstruation and religion are also touched on.
Although it seems that the problems that the protagonist must go through are far away, in reality they are situations that are repeated throughout history. This is why she, despite being set in the Middle Ages, feels so close to her. And they help with this a very careful and pop production design.
Another point to highlight: the unmatched chemistry between Bella Ramnsey and Andrew Scott, who handles the teen’s father. The cast is completed with Paul Kaye, Joe Alwyn, Dean-Charles Chapman, Billie Piper, Ralph Ineson, Archie Renaux, Isis Hainsworth, Douggie McMeekin and Rita Bernard-Shaw.
