The sequel to Netflix’s “Knives Out” repeats the success but not the quality of its predecessor

Tech billionaire Miles Bron invites his friends for a getaway to his private Greek island. When someone is found dead, Detective Benoit Blanc takes over the case.

Knives Out (premiered in Latin America as Between knives and secrets) is a 2019 film written and directed by Rian Johnson with an exceptional cast and absolute success among the public. It also enjoyed a good response from critics and received nominations and awards all over the world. The sequel Glass Onion: A Knives Out Mystery (Glass Onion: A Knives Out Mystery (2022) did not wait, being only postponed by the pandemic. Once again, detective Benoit Blanc (Daniel Craig) stars in a mystery adventure, a new whodunit, a genre that has become fashionable again in recent years. With the repeat success, a third film is already on the way. The successes are not discussed, but it is necessary to say that the quality between both films is abysmal.

The plot is even more similar to Agatha Christie’s novels than its predecessor. The film opens with capricious billionaire Miles Bron (Edward Norton) inviting his old friends to spend a few days on his private Greek island. The invitations are as outlandish as they are implausible, which heralds the tone of the entire film. Bron’s idea is to play, precisely, to solve a (false) crime on the island during those shared days. But among the guests appears, without anyone knowing the reason, detective Blanc. Not even the millionaire knows how he got the exclusive invitation, but still he is received.

Due to the nature of the story, nothing else can be anticipated about the plot, because every surprise is worth gold. However, it should be mentioned that the humorous tone this time does not work and that the cast has some stars and a couple of surprise cameos. The narrative stumbles along, but by using the flashback device beyond the events on the island, all rigor is lost and the story becomes uninteresting and definitely boring, without grace or mystery.

It is not easy to repeat a success, but even more difficult to maintain quality. The script seeks to be ingenious but fails to do so and the ending is hard to believe. But what is a distracting element is the intention to put together an ideological story, showing the millionaire as a parodic version of Elon Musk. Even a mural with Kanye West on one of the walls of the mansion seems a somewhat ironic comment on the way in which both figures are currently associated in the imaginary of the networks. The final reflection of the film confirms a feeling against the creator of Tesla that has been celebrated in the United States but has left the rest of the world indifferent.

Throughout the film there is an excessively conjunctural humor, marked by jokes about the pandemic, social networks and even more urgent and ephemeral details. If there is something in Agatha Christie’s books that is not here, it is the charm of transcending any era or historical moment or ideological paradigm. But precisely for this reason she is considered the master of the genre.
