2022 marked a great year for the cinema, which left a good number of titles that are worth seeing if you are a fan of good cinema. One of those titles is The Banshees of Inisherin either the spirits of the islandthe director’s latest film Martin McDonald and that tomorrow it arrives in theaters in Latin America.
If McDonagh’s name doesn’t ring a bell, he’s the director of movies like in bruges, seven psychopaths and a dog Y Three ads for a crime, the film released in 2017 and starring Frances McDormand, Woody Harrelson and Sam Rockwell. For her new bet, McDonagh reunited the protagonists of in bruges, Colin Farrel Y Brendan Gleesonbut this time to reflect on some simpler aspects of life, but with hints of tragedy and black comedy.
the end of a friendship
the spirits of the island takes us back to 1923 to Inisherin, a fictitious Irish city where monotony and routine are an essential part of the existence of the inhabitants of this remote place, who still see the onslaught of the Irish Civil War in the distance. Here we meet two friends, the musician Colm Doherty (Gleeson) and his drinking buddy Pádraic Súilleabháin (farrell).
The routine of these friends is simple. Every day at 2 pm they meet at the local pub to indulge in drink and spend long hours talking. But one day everything changes, when Colm decides to ignore Pádraic. The reason? Colm decides that he wants to spend the rest of his days making music so he can leave a legacy, something to be remembered for. From one moment to the next, Pádraic’s life is shaken by the sudden loss of his friend, and most tragically, trying to understand why.
four souls in pain
In this story of life and death is where the protagonists of the story come into play. Colm and Pádraic brilliantly played by Gleeson and farrelleach with opposite personalities and providing the right counterpoint for each of the characters.
Pádraic is a farmer who lives a quiet and boring life who is completely at ease with that simple and uncomplicated life. He lives in a small house that he shares with his sister Siobhan, played by a perceptive Kerry Condom. Unlike her brother, Siobhan is not satisfied with her life. Intelligent and with dreams ahead, the woman dreams of escaping from that remote and conformist life. She is even the only one of this trio of men who manages to confront Colm about the abrupt end to the friendship between him and Pádraic: that he finds the young man boring and does not want to waste time in meaningless chatter, so he prefers the company of his dog and his music.

The protagonist will also seek the help of Dominic, a dim-witted young man trying to escape the clutches of his abusive father and who will do whatever it takes to win Pádraic’s attention. As for Colm, the existential crisis reaches its climax when feelings of anguish and despair lead him to take extreme measures, such as ending the insipid relationship with Pádraic, from which he seems to derive no benefit.
man as an island
the spirits of the island It raises a more theatrical tone than the director’s previous productions, which bring him even closer to his origins as a playwright. The simplicity of the staging is complemented by the complexity of these characters who often reach extreme situations that border on the ridiculous.
It also raises a study of loneliness, since each character is single, widowed or simply alone, so the only possible refuge is their peers who surround them. Hence, friendship shows as one of the purest links, given the social context. However, Pádraic’s sadness and anguish, at the abandonment of his friend, quickly turns into animosity that sparks a feud between him and Colm.
Despair is also reflected in the environment and in each of the locations used in the film. Cinematographer Ben Davis was able to capture the beauty of the remote island of Inishmore, which was used to bring the fictional Inisherin to life. In the distance, on the horizon, you can make out the mainland, where the flashes of the explosions and the noise of the bombings give an account of the bloody civil war that seems not to affect the population of Inisherin, who have been forgotten in their isolation.

On further analysis, the disintegration of the relationship between Pádraic and Colm is an allegory of the conflict. A dispute out of control that causes irreversible damage between the parties.
the spirits of the island It is an introspective story about life, death and mortality itself. The film manages to combine the black humor of in bruges and the drama of Three ads for a crimeresulting in a dramatic comedy that at times is pleasant with hints of deep melancholy.
