Until recently, naming Ke Huy Quan didn’t say much. Her face, even, was not that of a recognized celebrity. Today, the story has changed. His name sounds like a winner at awards where he has beaten figures like Brad Pitt and it would not be surprising if he is nominated for an Oscar. He, who was discarded by Hollywood, and forgotten by many.

Ke Huy Quan was barely 13 years old when luck knocked on his door: Steven Spielberg, nothing more and nothing less, chose him to be one of the protagonists of “Indiana Jones and the Temple of Doom” (1984). Success and fame were assured: the child actor became Harrison Ford’s remembered Vietnamese partner. The public would not forget it.

A year later, his face appeared in another ’80s classic: “The Goonies.” The rush of fame began to slow down. He filmed a few more movies, worked on television, but his promising career began to fade.

Relegated by Hollywood, in 2002 he dropped the actor poster and managed to stay in the film industry, but as a choreographer of martial arts scenes. The performance became nothing more than a memory, a brief moment of glory.

Fate had a surprise in store for him, or rather, a resurrection, one of those -rare- stories of revival in an industry where few things are as difficult as defeating oblivion.

Ke Huy Quan was asked to be part of the cast of the crazy and frenetic movie “Everything everywhere at the same time”. The tape, which tells how an Asian family lives adventures in various parallel realities -the true multiverse of madness, with the forgiveness of Doctor Strange-, surprised viewers and critics alike, becoming one of the surprises of 2022.

The boy from “Indiana Jones” and “The Goonies” was not only returning to acting, he was doing it in the best way. In the film he not only demonstrates his talent for martial arts, but, and above all, his histrionics, by playing numerous versions of himself in each universe.

“When I started my career as a child actor on ‘Indiana Jones and the Temple of Doom,’ I felt very lucky to have been cast. As I got older, I began to wonder if that was it. If that had been luck. For many years I was afraid of not having anything else to offer. No matter what I did, I would never surpass what I achieved when I was a child, ”he said weeks ago, after receiving a Golden Globe for Best Supporting Actor.

“Luckily, more than 30 years later, two guys thought of me. They remembered that child. And they gave me the opportunity to try again. Dan Kwan and Daniel Sheinert, thank you very much for helping me find my answer. They gave me more than I could have hoped for,” he said in his acceptance speech, thanking the directors. It hadn’t been luck.

This Sunday, Ke Huy Quan once again raised an award, the Critic’s Choice Award. There he met another actor who imitated him in the epic of his return: Brendan Fraser. Both shared the cast in 1992 in the film “Encino Man” and lived, years later, oblivion, to re-emerge magnified.

The two are, without a doubt, the men of the season. The Vietnamese actor confessed that his return to Hollywood made him discover that the industry had changed and that today there is a place for Asian actors in relevant roles.

His future proves it like this: he joined the cast of the series “Loki” and, like Brendan Fraser, he sounds like a candidate for the Oscars. And, who knows, you might even have a chance. It wasn’t luck. At 51 years old, nothing is said.
