The creator of The Last of Us saw the perfect Ellie in Bella Ramsey.

HBO’s The Last of Us series premieres in just a few days and most fans are waiting with bated breath to see how they’ve been able to adapt the story and characters of the game to the small screen. From what we have been able to see so far, although from time to time it will take its own creative licenses, the series will recreate some of the most loved and remembered scenes from the Naughty Dog game starring Eliie and Joel. As for the protagonists, while Pedro Pascal seems to have the entire public in his pocket in his role as Joel, Bella Ramsey she has received more criticism for being chosen to play Ellie. In a recent interview with showrunner Craig Mazin (Chernobyl) and co-writer/director/executive producer Neil Druckmann (creator of The Last of Us) with The Hollywood ReporterDruckmann assured that covering the role of Ellie was an important issue, so they came to interview “dozens and dozens” of female candidates. The Ellie in the series, as in the game, had to be “tough, vulnerable, and wise beyond her years, and also have potential for violence“.

Druckmann reveals that for the role of Ellie they were considered actresses of the stature of maisie williamsknown for playing Arya Star in Game of Thrones, or Kaitlyn Dever, famous for her role in Olivia Wylde’s Super Nerds. Kaitlyn Dever even took a board reading test for the role, Druckmann says, but both actresses were already too old to be considered to play Ellie in this adaptation of HBO’s The Last of Us.

Finally, Mazin and Druckmann chose Bella Ramsey among the other options. “Bella felt so real… It was like seeing Ellie in real actionit didn’t feel like watching an actor,” he concludes.
