Arrival follows the story of a skilled linguist who’s recruited by the army to communicate with extraterrestrial life…as well as to figure out whether the aliens come in peace or as a threat.
This war drama follows two lovers over several years after they are torn apart by a lie constructed by the woman’s jealous younger sister, and we’ll warn ya now: The ending is going to positively break you.
In this dark comedy, a washed-up Hollywood star attempts to pull off an ambitious Broadway show to restart his career, and let’s just say that the stress (and the pressure of his imposter-syndrome) really take a toll on him.

Once Upon a Time…In Hollywood (2019)
This Quentin Tarantino flick follows a struggling TV actor and his stunt double bestie during the final years of Hollywood’s Golden Age. Oh, and it also happens to be the same time as the events of the Manson Family murders.
Set in Edwardian London, The Prestige revolves around a bitter magician who drives himself to the brink of madness trying to figure out his rival’s latest trick, which seemingly involves teleportation.
Whiplash follows the incredibly intense relationship between an aspiring jazz drummer at an elite music conservatory and his terrifying instructor. Though they achieve success together, the teacher’s methods prove to be a bit too ruthless.
Okay, this one is real dark. In it, a lawyer agrees to represent an alter boy accused of murdering an archbishop, and as the Church’s dark secrets are revealed, the lawyer realizes this seemingly simple case is far more complex (and dangerous) than he initially believed.
Set in a small, Amish-style community cut off from the outside world, The Village follows one boy’s journey to the neighboring town to obtain medicine for a sick girl, despite warnings about the dangers that lurk outside of the village.
Jason Segel stars in this drama as Will, the son of a famous scientist who discovers definitive proof of an afterlife—though he begins to question whether he should have kept his discovery secret when suicide rates spike.
In this horror flick, a young woman returns from a stint in a psychiatric facility to find that her widowed father is now engaged to her mom’s former nurse, Rachel…oh, and her mom’s ghost starts appearing, claiming that Rachel murdered her.
Last Night in Soho (2021)
In this psychological thriller, a mysterious woman living in 1960s London forms a strange connection with Eloise, a modern-day woman who’s somehow able to experience the ’60s in London despite never having lived through the decade—and it’s nothing like she imagined.
This epic sci-fi drama revolves around a group of astronauts (including Matthew McConaughey, Anne Hathaway, and Jessica Chastain, among other big names) who are sent on a perilous mission through a wormhole in the hopes of finding a habitable planet. Expect the unexpected with this one.
Based on Stephen King’s novella of the same name, The Mist revolves around a group of strangers who become trapped in a local grocery store during a terrible storm, and as you can probs guess, things quickly get tense…especially when one of the trapped citizens decides they need to make a human sacrifice.
This fun whodunit flick features an all-star cast and a mystery surrounding the death of a wealthy patriarch, and it really will keep you guessing until the very one. Oh, and if you like this one, then you’ve gotta check out Glass Onion: A Knives Out Mystery as well.
As the title implies, this whole damn movie is a roller coaster ride, following a successful banker who—after his estranged brother reappears on his birthday—agrees to take part in a highly involved and increasingly personal game.
American Psycho (2000)
Based on the Bret Easton Ellis novel of the same name, this film is centered around a handsome, young professional who works on Wall Street by day and murders by night, and his character is more complicated than he initially appears.
When a man’s six-year-old daughter goes missing, police immediately point to a suspect—but when that sole suspect is released due to lack of evidence, the father must take matters into his own hands.
The Shawshank Redemption (1994)
Also based on a Stephen King novella, The Shawshank Redemption follows the unexpected friendship that develops over nearly 20 years between serving two consecutive life sentences (despite being innocent) and a fellow prisoner. We won’t spoil it, but the ending is just *chef’s kiss.*
In this chilling thriller, a young refugee couple escape from war-torn South Sudan to a town in England, only to find themselves haunted by evil spirits lurking beneath the surface of their new home.
Sam Rockwell stars in this one as a man who starts to experience disturbing hallucinations when he’s just a few weeks away from finishing up a solitary three-year mission mining on the moon, which make him question what’s real and what’s all in his head.
In Memento, a man attempts to track down the person who raped and killed his wife. The problem: Leonard suffers from a rare, untreatable form of memory loss, which makes it rather difficult to pursue his wife’s killer.

Lady in the Water (2006)
Part romantic fantasy, part psychological thriller, Lady in the Water follows what happens when a man inadvertently rescues a character from a bedtime story desperate to return to her own world, and it’s as wild as you’d expect from M. Night Shyamalan.
Shutter Island follows two US marshals who travel to an isolated hospital for the criminally insane to investigate the disappearance of a patient. However, when a hurricane strands them on the island, they quickly learn that the hospital’s chief physician may not be someone they can trust.
Set in the late ’40s, this spine-chilling thriller revolves around a mother who moves her two photosensitive children to the English coast while awaiting news about her husband, who’s off fighting in World War II. The problem: Their new home is seemingly haunted by ghosts.

The Life of David Gale (2003)
In this underrated crime flick, a former professor sitting on Death Row for the rape and murder of a fellow activist agrees to give an exclusive interview just days before his scheduled execution, and you’ll be left wondering until the very end: Is David Gale guilty or innocent?
This Christopher Nolan-directed sci-fi flick tells the story of a career thief who manages to steal info by infiltrating the dreams of his targets—though things get complicated when he’s given a new task: planting a new idea in someone’s mind.
Predestination will possibly leave you even more confused than Inception (which is saying something), but this Ethan Hawke-led thriller about a time traveling agency designed to prevent future killers is totally worth a watch.
In Uncut Gems, Adam Sandler takes a surprising turn as a fast-talking New York City jeweler who—feeling pressure from mounting debts and persistent collectors—makes a bet that could lead to a major windfall. Expect your anxiety level to peak while watching this one.
Jake Gyllenhaal stars in this one as an amateur cameraman who lands a new job skulking through Los Angeles at night, trying to capture grisly crimes in action. Lines become even more blurred when he starts working with a new director, who pushes him to catch even more seedy footage.
In this truly bizarre movie, two down-on-their-luck men who are fed up with their boring lives decide to start an underground fight club together, and we’d tell you more about it, except the first rule of Fight Club is: You do not talk about Fight Club.
Ex Machina follows two female humanoid robots desperate to experience the outside world, even if that means killing their creator. Think Westworld, but even wilder.
Based on a Dennis Lehane novel, Mystic River is all about an ex-con whose daughter is unexpectedly murdered and the two childhood friends the ex-con believes could be responsible.
What happens when a decorated soldier finds himself able to enter the body of a man minutes before he died on a commuter train explosion? He realizes he can prevent the explosion from happening—as long as he doesn’t run out of time first.
The Sixth Sense (1999)
One of the most well-known plot twist movies of all time, this thriller revolves around a child psychologist who attempts to help a young patient struggling with visions of dead people, never expecting the child will teach him something about himself.
Another Jordan Peele masterpiece, Us follows what happens when a family of four is visited by four masked strangers during a beachfront getaway—oh, and each those strangers happens to bear very strong resemblances to different members of the family.
Directed by Ben Affleck, this drama follows two Boston private investigators as they look into the kidnapping of young girl, and while this one is a tough watch, it will definitely keep you on the edge of your seat.
Sam Worthington stars in this thriller a father who rushes his daughter to the hospital after she breaks her arm during a road trip—only to wake up in the waiting room to find that no one in the hospital has any recollection of his family ever having checked in.
The Usual Suspects (1994)
Told entirely through flashbacks, The Usual Suspects revolves around one small-time con man’s story of how he managed to survive a major massacre, which he blames on an enigmatic (and seemingly invented) crime lord named Keyser Söze.
In this trippy sci-fi film, a teenager is warned of the end of the world by a demon rabbit, and he must figure out what’s really in peril: the world or his mental health.
When a couple mourning the loss of their unborn child decides to adopt, they both feel drawn to the same young girl—but as it turns out, that young orphan may just be linked to the series of unfortunate events that unfold following her adoption.
In this ’90s crime thriller, two detectives work together to track down a serial killer, whom they believe to be targeting people who have committed one of the Seven Deadly Sins (and killing them in a gruesome manner that represents that sin).
Told in reverse chronology, Identity follows 10 strangers who get stuck together in an isolated Nevada motel during a bad storm, where they find themselves mysteriously picked off one by one. It’s a wild ride, and it’s a must-watch for any plot twist lover.
